Lip care is skincare: Why the future of beauty lies in preventative lip formulations

Lip care has been treated as an afterthought for too long, but the data tells a different story. In our latest white paper with The Ordinary, we explore why lip care is entering its ‘skinification’ era and what that means for brands.

The era of quick-fix lip balms is over

For years, lip care has been treated as an afterthought, a cosmetic add-on designed to deliver temporary relief. But as beauty consumers become more ingredient-savvy and prevention-focused, expectations for lip care are rapidly catching up with skincare.

The skin on our lips is biologically different from the rest of the face. It is thinner, more delicate, more prone to water loss and hypersensitivity, and lacks the natural oil production that helps protect facial skin. Yet until recently, the category has been dominated by scrubs and surface-level hydration.

That’s changing.

A new generation of “skintelligent” consumers is demanding ingredient-led, evidence-based lip formulations that support long-term resilience, not just instant comfort.

Beyond the scrub: the barrier era begins

The shift away from harsh exfoliation is clear. Social media buzz for lip “barrier” has grown by +216%* over the past two years, while buzz for lip “scrub” has declined by -82%*.

Consumers are questioning aggressive methods and turning toward gentle, barrier-supportive alternatives. Google searches for “gentle exfoliator” and “over exfoliating” are both rising year-on-year, signalling heightened awareness of lip fragility.

For brands, this marks a pivotal opportunity: reposition lip care as protective, preventative and biologically intelligent.

Lip skinification: the rise of high-performance actives

Skincare science is no longer confined to the face.

Searches for “dermatologist recommended skin care routine” have grown +200%** over five years, and this scientific mindset is beginning to extend to lips.

Demand for ingredient-led lip treatments is accelerating:

  • “Peptide lip treatment” searches are up +155% YoY**
  • “Hyaluronic acid lip balm” is up +92% YoY**
  • Social buzz for lip “repair” has grown by +501% over two years**

Consumers are moving beyond surface moisture toward deeper hydration, collagen support and barrier repair. This “lip skinification” trend reframes the category as an essential step in a sophisticated beauty routine rather than an impulse purchase at checkout.

Post-fillers and the return to natural volume

At the same time, aesthetic priorities are shifting. Searches for “lip injections” have declined -18% year-over-year**, reflecting a retreat from high-commitment cosmetic procedures.

However, the desire for fuller lips hasn’t disappeared; it has evolved. Searches for “plumping lip balm” are up +56% YoY**, and “hydrating lip balm” is up +51%**. Consumers are increasingly seeking non-invasive, long-term solutions that support natural volume through hydration and barrier resilience.

This signals a move from dramatic transformation toward preservation and “prejuventation”, maintaining lip structure and collagen integrity over time.

The long game: preventative lip care

Longevity is reshaping the entire beauty industry, and lips are no exception.

Consumers are prioritising long-term outcomes over instant effects, reframing lip care as part of a proactive defence strategy against premature ageing, collagen loss and environmental stressors.

The future of lip care lies in formulations that:

  • Strengthen the lip barrier
  • Deliver targeted actives
  • Support hydration at a structural level
  • Offer multifunctional, low-effort performance
